Set in the historic St. Mary's Church, Gateshead Heritage @ St Mary's opened in December 2008 with a programme of exhibitions and activities including a new family history section.
Gateshead Heritage @ St Mary's is a wonderful attraction and resource for local residents and visitors to the region.
Located next to The Sage Gateshead on the south bank of the River Tyne, the heritage centre is housed in one of the region’s most beautiful, fascinating and historical buildings.
For centuries St Mary's was the only church where old Gateshead's population could get married, buried or baptised. It also housed the original governing body of Gateshead, and attached it was Gateshead’s very first school. Buried in its graveyard and commemorated on its walls are a rich variety of heroes, villains and characters from Gateshead’s past.
The oldest building on the Quayside, St Mary’s has seen more than its fair share of disease and disaster in its long history, but has also seen regional regeneration and progression.
Thanks to a £1.2m renovation, generously funded by Gateshead Council, the European Regional Development Fund, and the Heritage Lottery Fund, St Mary’s building now hosts Gateshead Council’s heritage centre.
Gateshead Heritage @ St Mary’s welcomes visitors to learn the history of Gateshead, and provides a spectacular venue for events, family history research and educational activities.
